Chestnut Carbon Expands Carbon Removal Efforts with Microsoft Partnership
Georgia Wray Norsten — January 31, 2025Chestnut Carbon has entered a landmark agreement with Microsoft to provide high-quality, nature-based carbon removal credits through afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR) projects across the Southern U.S. This 25-year deal will result in over 7 million tons of carbon removal credits, reinforcing Microsoft's commitment to reaching carbon negativity by 2030. By restoring 60,000 acres of land and planting 35 million native trees, the initiative will enhance biodiversity while significantly reducing atmospheric carbon.
This partnership supports Chestnut Carbon’s broader goal of restoring marginal agricultural lands into thriving forests. The company’s Sustainable Restoration Project ensures long-term conservation through biodiversity planting, risk mitigation, and stakeholder engagement. As part of its ARR strategy, Chestnut aims to grow its portfolio to 500,000 acres by 2030, with a projected carbon removal impact of 100 million tons over 50 years.
By investing in high-quality, removal-based carbon credits, Chestnut Carbon and Microsoft are pioneering scalable, nature-based solutions to combat climate change. This initiative strengthens corporate climate commitments and accelerates the transition to a sustainable future.
