IKEA Pledges to Accelerated Climate Actions and Goals
Debra John — December 18, 2024Accelerated climate actions were a key focus for IKEA in FY23, as the company made significant progress toward its climate and sustainability goals. IKEA reduced its total climate footprint by 22% compared to FY16 and by 12% compared to the previous year. This achievement was driven by "the increased use of renewable electricity in stores and factories, improved energy-efficient lighting, and lower production volumes; notably, emissions from product use at home were reduced by 52% compared to FY16."
To further cut emissions, IKEA introduced bio-based glue at a Lithuanian factory and explored innovative methods to recycle fiberboard. Additionally, to "halve greenhouse gas emissions by FY30 and achieve net-zero emissions by FY50, IKEA continues to focus on renewable and recycled materials, sustainable production practices, and addressing challenges like deforestation, air pollution, and equitable economic growth."
