Brown University has introduced a new Master’s Degree in Clean Energy, designed to equip students with the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills needed to address global climate change and lead the transition to sustainable energy systems. The one-year, on-campus program combines technical expertise in renewable energy science with an understanding of the economic and policy frameworks surrounding energy issues. The curriculum includes core courses on sustainable energy science, climate and energy modeling, decarbonization of the power grid, and the policy and economics of energy transitions. Students can choose between two tracks: a technical track focusing on power generation and advanced materials, or a policy and economics track addressing climate politics and environmental issues.

The program is housed within Brown’s School of Engineering and emphasizes a forward-thinking approach to energy challenges. In addition to classroom learning, students have opportunities to engage with resources and events at the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society, the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, and the Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship. Graduates are expected to pursue impactful careers in public, private, or nonprofit sectors, contributing to renewable energy, electrification, decarbonization, and climate mitigation efforts. The program aims to prepare students to navigate the complexities of the energy transition and advance secure, equitable, and efficient energy systems.
