Delta Air Lines is enhancing the airline industry's sustainability efforts by introducing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

SAF is a game-changing, drop-in fuel alternative that integrates seamlessly into existing aircraft engines without needing modifications. Compared to conventional petroleum-based jet fuel, SAF offers a remarkable reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions—up to 80%—positioning it as a key driver in the aviation sector's efforts to achieve carbon neutrality.

With SAF, Michigan's locally sourced feedstocks, such as agricultural waste using cooking oil, soybeans, and corn, can be transformed, creating a sustainable supply chain that bolsters the state’s farming economy.

“As we continue developing and embracing clean energy solutions within Michigan’s mobility ecosystem, sustainable aviation fuel at Detroit Metropolitan Airport provides an exciting opportunity for Michigan to help be a part of the aviation industry’s clean energy future,” said Justine Johnson, chief mobility officer for the State of Michigan.
