Sustainable Aviation Fuel Plants
Gevo Inc. Aims to Develop a New Plant in South Dakota
Debra John — November 8, 2024Gevo Inc., an alternative fuels company from Colorado, recently secured a substantial loan from the U.S. Department of Energy to advance its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. This new plant, called Net-Zero 1, will be located in Lake Preston, South Dakota, and aims to "produce SAF, renewable diesel, and renewable naphtha using corn as a feedstock; by integrating carbon capture technology, the Net-Zero 1 plant seeks to make its fuel production carbon-negative, thereby helping to offset emissions from aircraft tailpipes."
Furthermore, to support long-term carbon management, Gevo has partnered with Summit Carbon Solutions. This partnership includes "constructing a pipeline to transport the captured carbon dioxide to a storage site in North Dakota, which enhances Gevo’s commitment to sustainability." With financing expected to close by 2025 and substantial third-party funding, this initiative represents a key step toward reducing aviation’s environmental impact and transitioning the industry to cleaner fuel alternatives.
