Sustainable Refugee-Supporting Enterprises
Skilled Accents Uses Fabric Scraps To Make Pillows
Grace Mahas — September 10, 2019In an effort to support Canadian refugees, one new social enterprise, Skilled Accents, is supporting women in need in a sustainable and zero waste way. The new organization teaches newcomers to repurpose scraps of fabric from furniture and drapery stores to create avant-garde and eye-catching accent pillows.
"We don't require them to speak English, we don't require them to have a certain diploma or certain certificate. It's something they already know. They all know how to sew, it's part of their household back home," Kay Habib, CEO of Skilled Accents stated. This niche social enterprise not only helps women without damaging the environment, but it also gives consumers a chance to help those in need by purchasing these dynamic accent pillows.
