The Second Cut Hike Sock is a first-of-its-kind circular sock from Merino wool apparel manufacturer Smartwool and it delivers all of the comfort and performance features of the Original Classic Hike Sock but with repurposed yarn. This new sock makes the most of repurposed yarn from Smartwool's Second Cut sock takeback program, which launched in 2021. Through this program, consumers can recycle any socks of any brand, color, size or material, but only material from donated Smartwool socks go towards making the Second Cut sock.

Smartwool is making the shift to a more circular business model by re-spinning old socks into new yarn and blending it with responsibly sourced Merino wool. This sock featured an elasticized arch and seamless toe for comfort and it helps to give new life to socks, which are among the most-discarded pieces of apparel according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
