The Roxana Landfill is setting a new standard in sustainable waste management with its innovative landfill gas to renewable natural gas (RNG) conversion facility. Developed through a joint venture between Ameresco Inc. and Republic Services, this cutting-edge project repurposes landfill gas into pipeline-quality RNG, reducing greenhouse gas emissions while contributing to a cleaner energy future.

With an annual production capacity of 1.4 trillion British thermal units of RNG, the facility captures and processes 6,000 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas, preventing methane from being released into the atmosphere. The system removes impurities and upgrades landfill gas into a usable energy source by utilizing advanced membrane separation technology, aligning with Illinois’ clean energy goals. The impact is substantial -- reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 82,000 metric tons annually, equivalent to taking 5,000 cars off the road.

By converting waste into energy, the Roxana Landfill facility demonstrates how sustainable innovation can drive a circular economy, paving the way for waste-to-energy solutions across North America.
