Conscious Mardi Gras Celebrations

RecycleDat! Returns to Promote Ethical Mardi Gras Festivities

Mardi Gras in New Orleans, one of North America’s largest and most vibrant festivals, attracts huge crowds and parties. However, the celebrations often result in significant waste generation. In response, a collaborative effort between Grounds Krewe, the City of New Orleans, the tourism agency, and various other partners is ensuring that several tons of waste are collected and recycled during the ongoing 2025 festivities.

Now in its third year, the 'RecycleDat!' initiative is supported by major sponsors such as Coca-Cola and the Can Manufacturers Institute’s Every Can Counts program. This partnership helps reduce the festival's environmental impact while promoting sustainability throughout the celebration.

“New Orleans continues to lead by example in making our iconic traditions more sustainable, and Recycle Dat! is proof of that progress,” Greg Nichols, director of the city’s Office of Resilience and Sustainability, said in a written statement. “By expanding this initiative year over year, we are reducing waste, supporting local nonprofits, and demonstrating that a greener Mardi Gras is possible.”
