Simplified Carbon Label Menus
Just Salad Offers an 'Earth-Friendly' Menu Board
Debra John — January 3, 2025The 'Earth-Friendly' Menu at Just Salad offers customers an easy way to make eco-conscious food choices by displaying carbon labels on menu items. These labels, shown on the website, in-store Earth-Friendly menu boards, and the mobile app, provide information about the environmental impact of each dish, helping customers select items with a lower carbon footprint.
The carbon labels are "measured in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kg CO2e), which represents emissions from various greenhouse gases." These labels cover the entire life cycle of a meal, from production to disposal, indicating the total greenhouse gas emissions involved.
In stores, the Earth-Friendly Menu highlights plant-based salads with lower carbon footprints. The mobile app also tags Earth-Friendly items, and customers can offset their meal’s carbon emissions during checkout. The required carbon credit "depends on the selected items’ carbon labels, with lower-impact choices needing less credit." Moreover, these credits support verified projects that help reduce or prevent emissions.
