The EU's New Goods Passport Highlights Sustainable Product Tracking
Debra John — December 6, 2024The European Union (EU) is introducing a requirement for nearly all products sold within its market to include a Digital Product Passport (DPP). This initiative, part of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), is designed to improve sustainability and support the EU’s circular economy goals.
The DPP will function as a digital database containing key information about a product’s lifecycle, from raw material sourcing to disposal. Accessible through technologies such as "QR codes, barcodes, and unique identifiers, the DPP aims to enhance transparency by providing detailed insights into each product." This system is intended to help consumers make informed decisions while encouraging businesses to adopt sustainable practices. By improving traceability and accountability, the DPP represents a significant step toward achieving greater sustainability within the EU market.
