DarkSky International has partnered with the LUCI Association (Lighting Urban Community International) to promote sustainable urban lighting and combat light pollution. The collaboration aims to leverage urban lighting as a tool for social, cultural, and economic development while minimizing light pollution for all living beings. LUCI, a global network of nearly 70 member towns and cities, adopted the Declaration for the Future of Urban Lighting in 2023, outlining a framework for sustainable urban lighting across seven goals and four thematic chapters. This partnership underscores the importance of integrating responsible outdoor lighting practices into city sustainability plans.

The collaboration between DarkSky and LUCI focuses on implementing the five principles for responsible outdoor light at night. These principles include using lighting only when and where needed, ensuring lighting is no brighter than necessary, directing light downwards to reduce skyglow, and using warmer fixtures where possible. By following these guidelines, cities can promote quality urban lighting that reclaims the stars and creates healthier, more livable urban environments. The partnership aims to breathe life into these concepts, contributing to broader sustainability goals and enhancing the quality of urban living.
