In recent years, studies by NASA and the Environmental Protection Agency have revealed that air inside homes and buildings is "two to five times more polluted than the air outside" – a frightening fact that has made designers, like those behind Pixelation Project, rethink how they create architecture.

The Pixelation Project aims to improve air quality indoors, and is doing so by creating "living wall art compositions" that filter indoor air. These living walls are made up of plants, and are not the same as walls covered in vegetation – they are "breathing, functioning and living systems that work with the surrounding environment/context."

Initiatives like the Pixelation Project are particularly important in environments with high populations.
