Sustainable Venue Lighting Plans
The Metro Toronto Convention Centre is Investing in Eco Practices
Colin Smith — January 31, 2025The Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) has undertaken a significant upgrade to its lighting system, transitioning to high-performing LED fixtures to enhance sustainability and energy efficiency. The upgrade involved replacing 1,431 outdated metal halide fixtures with LEDVANCE's energy-efficient LEDs, resulting in substantial energy and cost savings. The new lighting system not only reduces energy consumption by approximately 50% but also minimizes maintenance requirements due to the long lifespan of LED fixtures. This initiative aligns with MTCC's broader commitment to environmental stewardship, which includes sourcing local food and beverages, recycling, and waste diversion.
The lighting upgrade is part of MTCC's ongoing efforts to promote ethical and ecological practices. By improving the quality of lighting in its exhibit halls, the convention centre aims to provide a more uniform and comfortable environment for occupants. The project, completed in collaboration with LEDVANCE and Green Bird Electric Solutions Inc., is expected to reduce the centre's carbon footprint by nearly 944,000 kWh annually. This move towards sustainable lighting is a step towards achieving MTCC's goal of becoming a more environmentally responsible facility, benefiting both the organization and the broader community.
