Bausch + Lomb Recycles Contact Lenses Through Recycling Programs

Bausch + Lomb Corporation has revealed that its 'ONE by ONE Recycling' and 'Biotrue Eye Care Recycling' programs have "collected 94,119,275 units—equivalent to 569,743 pounds—of used contact lenses, eye care products, and packaging materials across the United States." These items, often too small and made of plastics unsuitable for conventional recycling, frequently end up in landfills or waterways. Estimates suggest that "six to 10 metric tons of contact lenses are disposed of in wastewater annually, raising concerns about pollution and its effects on aquatic ecosystems and food safety."

Additionally, Bausch + Lomb offers the 'Every Contact Counts' program in Canada, furthering its commitment to waste reduction. Partnering with TerraCycle, an expert in recycling difficult materials, these programs provide contact lens wearers and eye care professionals with practical solutions to support sustainability.
