Element Energy's '53 MWh Storage Project' Repurposes EV Batteries
Debra John — November 22, 2024Element Energy has launched a large-scale grid-connected battery storage system using repurposed electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Located in West Central Texas, the '53 MWh Storage Project' consists of "900 retooled EV batteries, which store and release power to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid; the system has been operational since May 2024."
This project demonstrates the potential of reusing EV batteries for energy storage, offering commercial and environmental benefits. By utilizing second-life batteries, the system "helps reduce waste and decrease the need for new materials, contributing to more sustainable energy storage solutions." As a result, this initiative serves as an example of how repurposed EV batteries can be used in grid storage, influencing future energy storage technology development. Overall, this project highlights the growing trend of sustainable practices in the energy sector.
