Electreon, a wireless charging company, is collaborating with UCLA to implement a groundbreaking project that embeds wireless charging technology in a street on the university's campus. This innovative system utilizes inductive charging coils installed beneath the asphalt, allowing electric buses to charge while driving and at designated stops. The technology aims to address the limitations of current EV charging infrastructure by providing continuous charging throughout the day, enhancing the operational efficiency of UCLA's electric bus fleet.

The project, funded by a $19.85 million grant from the California State Transportation Agency, is part of UCLA's broader initiative to transition its entire BruinBus fleet to electric power in preparation for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. While the initial installation costs are higher than standard EV chargers, the long-term benefits include reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved service reliability. The wireless charging system is expected to be cost-competitive with traditional chargers once fully implemented.
