Kenya Promotes Greener Tea and Coffee Initiatives

Tea and coffee initiatives are at the center of Kenya's efforts to make its trade practices more environmentally friendly and combat climate change "since according to recent studies have revealed that certain practices within these industries contribute significantly to environmental harm, highlighting the need for urgent reforms."

On December 12, 2024, during a workshop to review the proposed framework, Joseph Rotich, Acting Director for External Trade, emphasized the challenges posed by climate change to the tea and coffee sectors. He underscored the necessity of adopting sustainable strategies to secure the future of these critical industries.

The initiative focuses on "implementing the Kenya Green Supplement to the National African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Strategy." This plan aims to minimize environmental impact, encourage greener trade practices, and ensure the long-term sustainability of Kenya’s tea and coffee industries.
