Stella McCartney Partnered with Balena for Upcycled Designs
Debra John — January 22, 2025Stella McCartney partnered with Balena to introduce trainers made from 'BioCir Flex,' an innovative material debuting in the 'Autumn 2025' collection. Designed as "a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics, BioCir Flex is non-toxic, compostable, recyclable, and biobased, reflecting the brands' dedication to environmentally responsible fashion."
Sourced from renewable materials such as "castor beans, plant-based oils, and polysaccharides, BioCir Flex minimizes environmental impact while maintaining durability comparable to thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and the flexibility of rubber." Additionally, it is dyed using natural cinnamon, further enhancing its sustainability.
David Roubach, founder of Balena Science, highlighted the collaboration’s significance, emphasizing that it represents more than a partnership—it embodies a shared commitment to circular, high-performance materials that advance sustainable innovation in fashion. This initiative reinforces the potential of upcycled design in shaping a more responsible industry.
