Solar-Powered Irrigation Systems
This Technology Helps Farmers Increase Crop Yields in Dry Places
Katherine Pendrill — November 23, 2015'SunCulture' is a Kenya-based startup that designs solar-powered irrigation systems. Drip irrigation is a unique type of farming technology that delivers droplets of water directly to the base of a plant. While this technology can help to boost crop yields, the system cannot run without the use of expensive diesel generators.
Now SunCulture has devised a way for off-the-grid farmers to access drip irrigation. The starup makes the technology available to low-income farmers in Kenya by providing them will inexpensive solar-powered irrigation products. The system consist of durable solar panels that are connected to a complex irrigation tube network. These systems can help farmers save water and increase crop yields at the same time.
The new technology may ultimately help farmers maximize arable land in dry climates.
