Sustainable Self-Powered Rooftop Greenhouses

Marjan Van Aubel's Design Harnesses Solar Energy

Dutch designer Marjan Van Aubel contributes to a more sustainable future with his rooftop greenhouse structure. The project is relevant in a number of ways — for one it is inherently beneficial to the environment. Secondly, it also has the ability to address possible food shortages.

In order to work, the structure harnesses sunlight through installed solar panels. The power is fed into the operation of an integrated hydroponic system and color-interchanging LED lights that help stimulate plant growth. As Marjan Van Aubel created the self-sufficient rooftop greenhouse based on the knowledge that "every hour we receive enough sunlight to provide the world with sufficient electricity for an entire year," each surface of the 'Power Plant' is equipped with the relevant technology that makes it productive.
