The 'SMR-Powered Ship,' introduced by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), a subsidiary of HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding division, utilizes Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology to advance the development of nuclear-powered container ships. This innovative design focuses on enhancing both economic efficiency and safety.

Unlike traditional ships, nuclear-powered vessels do not require engine exhaust systems or fuel tanks. HD KSOE has optimized the space previously used for large engine room equipment to accommodate more containers, boosting the ship’s capacity and cost-effectiveness.

To ensure safety, the company has incorporated a marine radiation shielding system using a double-tank method with stainless steel and light water. This design supports the goal of reducing carbon emissions while maintaining a high level of safety in nuclear-powered shipping.
