Sustainably Produced Rums

Ron del Barrilito Utilizes Rainwater for Rum Production

Rum production at Ron del Barrilito follows traditional methods while incorporating sustainable practices. As Puerto Rico’s oldest rum producer, it was founded in 1871 by Pedro F. Fernández at Hacienda Santa Ana, where it continues to operate today. The brand’s name—meaning "Rum from the Small Barrel"—originated from its early practice of serving rum directly from the barrel.

A key environmental initiative is rainwater harvesting. The distillery collects and filters rainwater for use in rum production, employing sediment removal, carbon filtration, and lenticular filtration to ensure purity. Additionally, Ron del Barrilito cultivates fruit trees, donating harvested fruit to local shelters. The brand has also transitioned back to cork closures, replacing plastic screw caps with a more sustainable alternative.

These efforts support resource conservation while maintaining the quality and craftsmanship of Ron del Barrilito rum.
