Eco Prepaid Cards

Blackhawk Network Launched Paper-Based Prepaid Cards

Blackhawk Network (BHN) has introduced paper-based prepaid cards, replacing the plastic used in its network-branded open-loop products. This change is part of "BHN’s commitment to sustainability and supports Mastercard’s goal of eliminating first-use PVC plastics from payment cards by 2028." Initially launched in the US and Canada in 2023, the initiative contributes to BHN’s broader efforts to reduce its environmental impact.

Importantly, paper-based cards offer the same functionality as traditional plastic cards and can be used wherever Mastercard is accepted. In addition to this, BHN is investing in eco-friendly materials for other production formats, such as "print-on-demand, while also enhancing its digital card options; this shift not only reduces the reliance on physical cards but also meets the growing consumer demand for customizable digital experiences." Ultimately, this move reflects the increasing consumer preference for environmentally conscious brands and provides partners with an opportunity to lower their ecological footprint.
