Sustainable Handcrafted Lighting Designs
Oorjaa Studios Creates its Lights with Banana Fibers
Colin Smith — January 31, 2025Oorjaa Studios, a Bangalore-based design studio, has gained recognition for its innovative approach to sustainable lighting design. Founded by designer Jenny Pinto in 1998, the studio initially focused on artisanal banana-fiber paper-making. Over time, Oorjaa transitioned into creating handcrafted lighting solutions, transforming natural and waste materials like banana fiber, quarry waste, and upcycled cork into functional and artistic pieces. Their designs emphasize circular design principles, combining traditional craftsmanship with environmentally conscious practices.
Oorjaa's latest collection, showcased at Design Next by Isola Design during Dubai Design Week 2024, exemplifies their commitment to sustainability and artistry. The studio collaborates with NGOs and tribal artisans to create unique lighting sculptures that turn environmental challenges into sculptural masterpieces. By using materials often considered waste, Oorjaa not only reduces environmental impact but also highlights the beauty of handcrafted work, making each piece a testament to sustainable living and design.
