Swedish company Aira is revolutionizing low-carbon heating by offering heat pumps on an affordable subscription basis, removing the significant upfront cost barrier. Heat pumps, a sustainable alternative to gas boilers, typically cost around €11,500 to buy and install -- deterring many homeowners despite their environmental benefits.

Aira’s subscription model spreads the cost over manageable monthly payments, starting at €6,600, making green heating more accessible. The company aims to switch five million homes across Germany, Italy, and the UK to heat pumps within the next decade. 'Our mission is to make heat pumps accessible for people across Europe,' says Aira CEO Martin Lewerth.

Heat pumps are effective in various building types and have long been a standard in Sweden, where residential heating contributes just 1% to the nation’s carbon emissions. Aira’s approach, coupled with government subsidies, is accelerating the transition to low-carbon heating, aligning with Europe’s climate targets while addressing financial barriers to sustainability.
