Waste Heat from Data Centers Powers Urban Energy Solutions

Once dismissed as energy-intensive liabilities, these facilities are now repurposing low-grade heat to support district heating networks, public swimming pools, and greenhouses.
Across Europe, data center waste heat is being integrated into community energy strategies. In England, local swimming pools benefit from free heating provided by data centers, reducing operational costs during the energy crisis. Meanwhile, Nordic countries channel excess heat into industrial processes like wood drying, while others power sustainable food production.
Upgrading waste heat for residential heating requires heat pumps and innovative designs. For instance, a Manchester data center includes infrastructure to connect with future district heating networks. Investment in such systems is supported by green funding and tax incentives, fostering collaborations between data centers, local governments, and businesses to create sustainable urban energy ecosystems.
