AI-Powered Emissions-Reducing Solutions

Polar Night Energy Aims to Develop a Sand Battery

Currently under development in Pornainen, southern Finland, the world’s largest Sand Battery aims to provide clean district heating while reducing emissions. The system is designed to adjust operations based on fluctuations in electricity prices and grid flexibility requirements.

Elisa, a leading Finnish telecom and digital services provider, has been selected to implement a solution that will automate the Sand Battery’s charging process and "its involvement in the electricity reserve markets managed by Fingrid, Finland’s transmission system operator; this innovation is expected to generate substantial savings and revenue for Loviisan Lämpö, a Finnish district heating provider."

Created by Polar Night Energy, the Sand Battery functions as an extensive heat storage system, enabling the storage of renewable energy. Elisa’s "AI-powered solution will enhance the battery’s efficiency and integrate its flexibility capacity into Fingrid’s reserve markets, contributing both economically and environmentally to the energy sector."
