In a bid to decarbonize its aging housing stock, Glasgow has introduced eco-friendly electric wallpaper as a clean heating solution. This innovative technology, now being tested in 12 historic tenement properties, combines copper strips and graphene or carbon to conduct electricity, emitting invisible infrared heat that’s quick, efficient, and gas-free.

Scotland’s homes, some of the least insulated in Europe, lose heat quickly, leading to high energy consumption and significant CO₂ emissions. The electric wallpaper, a project supported by Scotland Beyond Net Zero and developed by NextGen Heating, addresses this challenge by providing a more sustainable heat source that reduces dampness and improves air quality. Installed on ceilings, it heats rooms within minutes and offers an easy installation process for older buildings.

Data analytics and AI monitor the technology’s performance, tracking energy efficiency and tenant comfort. Positive feedback underscores its potential to cut energy bills and emissions, paving the way for a cleaner, net-zero heating future in Scotland’s historic homes.
