Ormat Technologies Collaborates with PT Medco Power Indonesia
Kalin Ned — February 11, 2025Ormat Technologies, in collaboration with PT Medco Power Indonesia, has successfully launched the 35 MW Ijen geothermal power plant in East Java. This marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s renewable energy landscape. Geothermal energy is a reliable and sustainable power source, offering a stable alternative to fossil fuels while reducing carbon emissions.
This facility is a first of its kind in the region and utilizes Ormat’s proprietary Energy Converter technology to generate low-carbon electricity, which will contribute to Indonesia’s ambitious goal of adding 7.2 GW of geothermal capacity by 2035. The project is co-operated with PT Medco Cahaya Geothermal and represents the initial phase of a larger 110 MW development under a 30-year power purchase agreement. Ormat’s involvement underscores its commitment to expanding its global geothermal portfolio while supporting Indonesia’s transition to cleaner energy sources and its net-zero emissions targets.
