The Cotton Lives On Program Expands UK Sustainability Impact in 2025
Georgia Wray Norsten — April 17, 2025The 'Cotton Lives On' recycling program is kicking off its 2025 efforts with a renewed focus on keeping cotton textiles out of landfills. Developed by Cotton Council International and Cotton Incorporated, the initiative invites UK fashion brands and retailers to recycle garments containing at least 85% cotton. These donations are transformed into durable roll mats, helping to provide essential bedding for individuals experiencing homelessness across the UK.
The collected cotton is processed into a non-woven pad after being stripped of zippers, buttons, and other hardware. Partnering with Devon-based bedding supplier Naturalmat, the program converts this material into roll mats, which are distributed by charities like Shelter and Single Homeless Project. Each mat is made from approximately 6.4 kg of cotton -- equivalent to 45 T-shirts -- and is gifted as part of essential care kits for people moving into temporary or permanent housing.
With nearly 8,000 kg of cotton collected and around 100 roll mats distributed to date, the program demonstrates how circularity and compassion intersect. Cotton Lives On continues to grow, offering UK consumers and fashion brands a meaningful way to address textile waste while supporting vulnerable communities.
