A Clothing Dump Inspires an Eco-Fashion Show in Chile
Georgia Wray Norsten — April 11, 2025A powerful statement on textile waste was made at a recent fashion show staged on a clothing dump in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Organized by Desierto Vestido, the event turned discarded garments into bold runway pieces, using fashion as a medium to raise awareness about the environmental crisis driven by fast fashion. Each outfit was crafted from clothing abandoned in the desert -- part of the 39,000 tonnes dumped annually from the 60,000 tonnes Chile imports.
Collaborating with Brazilian creatives and fashion activists, the initiative highlighted the massive environmental toll of fashion waste. With the industry accounting for 10% of global CO₂ emissions and only 1% of garments recycled into new clothes, the show's visual impact underscored an urgent call for circularity and responsibility in fashion production.
The show also reflected a growing shift. As secondhand apparel markets expand, outpacing traditional retail, projects like Desierto Vestido help spark conversations that reimagine waste as an opportunity and style as sustainability.
