Bethany Christian Schools in Goshen, Indiana, is launching a new farm-to-school program that blends sustainability with hands-on education. The initiative allows students to grow fresh produce in the school’s garden, hoop house, and even through classroom grow lights, enhancing their knowledge of produce cultivation. The harvest is then incorporated into the school’s cafeteria meals, allowing students to enjoy the food they’ve grown.

“It’s been a real outgrowth of our commitment to sustainability,” said Tara Swarzendruber-Landis, the school’s Food Services and Farm-to-School Director. “Bethany was already awarded a Green Ribbon School award for sustainability, and this program just continues to reflect our values as a school.”

Currently, all produce is used on-site, but the school is considering future plans to sell plants and seeds from the garden. The program provides healthy meals and is a valuable learning tool, engaging students across all grade levels in farming and nutrition.
