Bee-Friendly Bus Shelters
Leicester City Introduces Bee Bus Stops with Living Roofs
Elena Rahman — July 5, 2021Bee Bus Sops are introduced to the city of Leicester in the United Kingdom as part of the city's goal to become carbon-neutral by 2030. The updated bus stations include green roofs, also referred to as Living Roofs. A mix of wildflowers and sedum plants are planted on bus stop roofs to attract pollinators like bees while encouraging more biodiversity into the cityscape.
Thirty bus stops of this kind were installed around the city of Leicester. Moreover, the Bee Bus Stops are designed to mitigate the effects of urban heat islands by collecting air pollutants and absorbing some heat during the summer. The collaborative project between Leicester's city council and Clear Channel UK is also set to include the eventual installation of solar panels.
