Atlantic-Salmon Saving Initiatives
The Atlantic Salmon Federation Proposes a Protective Solution
Debra John — January 31, 2025Pourvoirie Mécatina, with support from the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF), is urging the Quebec government to adjust the planned expansion of Highway 138 to protect the wild Atlantic salmon population in the Gros Mecatina River. Without changes, building a bridge across the river could disrupt its fragile ecosystem and threaten the future of this important species.
To address this concern, Pourvoirie Mécatina and its partners propose a simple yet effective solution: moving the highway about one kilometer south. By making this small adjustment, the project can avoid direct interference with the river, helping to preserve vital salmon habitat. At the same time, this change ensures that necessary infrastructure improvements can still move forward. Ultimately, this proposal provides a balanced approach that meets community needs while demonstrating that environmental protection and sustainable development can go hand in hand.
