Recyclable Kiwi Lid Liners

Tesco and Zespri have launched an innovative, eco-conscious packaging solution for kiwi fruit to reduce plastic use. This kerbside-recyclable packaging consists of a sturdy carton board tray provided by Smurfit Westrock and a linerless lid, forming an integrated system under ProPrint Group’s 'ProProduce' line. Specifically designed for individual kiwi packs, this approach replaces the traditional plastic flow wrap to accommodate consumer demand for packaging solutions with reduced impact.

Unlike standard labels that require backing paper, this label system uses adhesive strips on the underside and silicone on the surface, allowing the labels to adhere to themselves without extra waste. This eliminates the need for backing paper, which substantially impacts the environment.

Beyond sustainability, the packaging also focuses on visual appeal. The clean, minimalist design showcases the kiwis through a vibrant presentation intended to attract consumers looking for fresh, premium produce.
