Sun Ways Introduces Train Tracks for Sustainable Energy
Georgia Wray Norsten — February 6, 2025Sun Ways is advancing renewable energy with an innovative solar train track system that integrates removable photovoltaic panels onto railway infrastructure. This Swiss start-up has launched a pilot project in Neuchâtel canton to test the feasibility of generating solar energy from train tracks, offering a scalable solution to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The system uses a custom-designed train to install and maintain solar panels, allowing seamless integration without disrupting rail operations. With Switzerland’s vast railway network, Sun Ways estimates the technology could generate one terawatt-hour of electricity annually, covering 2% of the nation’s energy needs.
Beyond power generation, the system prioritizes environmental benefits, utilizing underutilized spaces while avoiding land-use conflicts. If successful, Sun Ways’ model could expand globally, supporting clean energy transitions in rail transport and setting a new benchmark for sustainable infrastructure solutions.
