A Photovoltaic Guardrail Turns Highways into Renewable Energy Hubs
Georgia Wray Norsten — March 18, 2025This trailblazing photovoltaic guardrail is set to transform road infrastructure by integrating renewable energy production with highway safety. Developed as part of the Liaison project, this innovative solar technology is being tested in Italy and could play a vital role in Europe's decarbonization goals. By embedding ultra-thin solar panels into roadside barriers, the guardrail can generate 25 megawatt-hours per kilometer annually, enough to power around 20 homes.
Beyond energy production, this dual-purpose guardrail enhances road safety with a specialized sheet that protects motorcyclists while supplying power for essential infrastructure like traffic signals and street lighting. Its modular design allows for easy maintenance and replacement, ensuring long-term durability. To combat efficiency losses from vehicle shadows, developers are incorporating advanced power electronics and optimized panel connections.
With 136,700 kilometers of roads across Europe, the widespread adoption of photovoltaic guardrails could significantly boost clean energy capacity. This project supports a circular economy by leveraging existing infrastructure, making highways more sustainable while reducing reliance on carbon-intensive materials.
