China has launched the world’s first oil production ship equipped with carbon capture facilities, advancing its efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Developed by Cosco Ocean Shipping Heavy Industry Company, the 330-meter floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) can process up to 120,000 barrels of crude oil daily. Unique in its design, the ship captures its own carbon emissions while generating electricity from exhaust heat, significantly lowering its environmental impact.

This initiative is a significant milestone in China’s carbon reduction strategy, aligning with its targets to peak emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero by 2060. The FPSO’s carbon capture capabilities are crucial in mitigating the 5.1 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases produced annually by global oil and gas operations. The move also reinforces China’s leadership in sustainable energy practices, joining international efforts to integrate carbon capture in industrial sectors. Other countries, including the U.S. and the Netherlands, are also exploring similar technologies for offshore energy production.
