UP Cebu in the Philippines Launched 'MATIX' for Sustainable Materials

The University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu has inaugurated the Materials Innovation and Exploration Lab (MATIX), a facility dedicated to advancing sustainable materials research and innovation. Launched on March 21, 2025, the lab is part of UP Cebu's Product Design Program and aligns with the national agenda of fostering Filipino ingenuity in materials science. Funded under the Department of Trade and Industry's Tatak Pinoy program, MATIX aims to bridge academia, industry, and community collaboration. Its core programs include materials research and development, product incubation, and a digital archiving system that integrates physical samples with online design tools. The lab is expected to support the development of high-impact materials for applications in various industries, including furniture, fashion, and packaging.

MATIX serves as a hub for sustainable innovation, empowering students, researchers, and entrepreneurs to create solutions that address environmental and economic challenges. The facility houses a New Materials Library, providing access to biodegradable, recycled, and sustainable materials for industry applications. During the launch event, UP Cebu Chancellor Leo Malagar emphasized the lab's role in fostering creativity and problem-solving rooted in local contexts. Assistant Regional Director Esperanza Melgar of DTI Region 7 highlighted MATIX's alignment with the Tatak Pinoy Strategy, which aims to enhance industrial competitiveness and promote sustainable development. This initiative underscores UP Cebu's commitment to driving innovation and supporting the growth of globally competitive industries.
