Single-serving coffee pods have become wildly popular but have been criticized for their disposable design, which is something the Nespresso compostable coffee capsules aims to make more eco-friendly.

The new coffee capsules were created with the help of sustainable packaging brand Huhtamaki and feature paper with a biopolymer lining to protect the coffee within from oxidization. The capsules are capable of being composted, as per their name, and will be compatible for use with the Nespresso Original system. Consumers in France and Switzerland will be the first to get their hands on the new products before a wider launch takes place in Europe within the year.

Huhtamaki CEO Charle Héaulmé commented on the new Nespresso compostable coffee capsules saying, "We are delighted to partner with Nespresso on the home compostable paper-based capsule. Part of this breakthrough innovation is the result of combining paper pulp from wood fibre, a natural renewable material, compressing it to a coffee capsule using our high precision technology, creating another sustainable alternative for Nespresso lovers.”
