Carton-based packaging has been a focus for brands who want to increase their commitment to sustainability. Now, Tetra Pak is launching its first trial facility for Recart in North America, aiming to increase adoption in the U.S. market and capture market share in food categories traditionally packaged in cans.

The facility, situated at a University of Georgia center, will enable the commercial testing of carton-based packaging for shelf stability, food safety, and product formulation. While beans, fruits, pet food, and sauces are highlighted as ideal products for Recart, Tetra Pak is also interested in exploring testing opportunities for prepared foods. The company emphasizes potential sustainability advantages, such as space-saving design and easily reclosable fiber-based packaging.

Housing the trial facility at a university offers broader research opportunities, allowing collaboration with external groups to bring ideas from concept to market launch.
