Healthy Soil Cultivations

Carbon Sponge Educates Gardeners About Soil Testing and Storage

Artist Brooke Singer recently launched Carbon Sponge, an interdisciplinary platform promoting carbon sequestration through soil health. Singer, a "self-taught soil nerd," views soil as a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life. Her initiative, Carbon Sponge, aims to cultivate healthy soil to combat climate change by absorbing and retaining carbon.

Carbon Sponge educates urban, suburban, and rural gardeners on soil testing and carbon storage. Singer's manual, "Carbon Sponge Guide," available on the Carbon Sponge website, offers tools and techniques for creating carbon-rich soils. The project also includes a farmer-to-farmer network and annual soil festivals to share knowledge and practices.

By focusing on regenerative agriculture, Carbon Sponge supports sustainable land use and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. This approach not only improves soil fertility but also enhances agricultural productivity. Singer's work represents a model for integrating art, science, and community action to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable farming practices.
