Banana Waste Converting Facilities
Egypt’s Banana Waste Recycling Plant Produces Cardboard
Debra John — October 30, 2024Egypt has inaugurated its first Banana Waste Recycling Plant, attended by Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad and Minister of State for Military Production Mohamed Salah El-Din Mustafa. This facility, "located at the Armoured Vehicles Production and Repair Factory (Military Factory 200), will create eco-friendly cardboard packaging using banana fiber waste."
In partnership with the Australian company Papyrus, the initiative "seeks to address Egypt’s annual production of 12 million tonnes of banana waste by converting it into sustainable household products." The project was implemented in two phases: first, a facility in Sohag was established to convert banana waste into fibers, and then an automatic production line was installed at Military Factory 200 for packaging production.
The plant aims to produce 60 million cardboard boxes annually, significantly reducing reliance on plastic products.
