Banana-Based Menstrual Pads
NIDISI and Sparśa Created Menstrual Pads with Upcycled Banana Fibers
Colin Smith — October 31, 2024NIDISI, a Berlin-based NGO, has developed eco-friendly menstrual pads made from upcycled banana fibers. These pads are produced through a women-led social business called Sparṣā, which operates in Bharatpur, Nepal. The banana fibers are sourced from banana plant waste, providing a sustainable alternative to conventional menstrual products that often contribute to environmental pollution. The initiative aims to address period poverty and promote menstrual health management while reducing the environmental impact of disposable menstrual products.
The banana-based menstrual pads are designed to be biodegradable and compostable, offering a more environmentally friendly option for women. By utilizing locally sourced banana fibers, NIDISI supports local communities and creates economic opportunities for women involved in the production process. The pads are also free from harmful chemicals, making them a safer choice for women's health. This approach aligns with global efforts to promote sustainable and inclusive solutions for menstrual hygiene management.
NIDISI's innovative product not only provides a sustainable menstrual hygiene solution but also helps combat the stigma associated with menstruation. By offering education and workshops on menstrual health management, the organization empowers women and girls in Nepal and beyond. The banana-based pads represent a step towards a more sustainable and equitable future, where access to safe and eco-friendly menstrual products is a reality for all women.
