AI-Based Recycling Initiatives

Cardiff is taking a bold step towards sustainability with a new paper cup recycling initiative powered by AI-based recycling technology. Launched by Keep Wales Tidy and the National Cup Recycling Scheme, the three-month pilot encourages consumers to return used cups for a 5p reward through the Bower app.

The program runs from April 22 to July 22, 2025, and involves major retailers, including Costa Coffee, Greggs, McDonald’s, Caffè Nero, and Pret a Manger. Consumers scan their cup using Bower’s AI-enabled photoscanner, then return it to a participating store for proper recycling. The initiative addresses the 2.5 billion paper cups discarded annually in the UK -- many of which end up in landfill due to contamination and improper disposal.

This pilot illustrates the power of technology and community collaboration in closing the loop on waste, keeping valuable materials in use and promoting environmentally responsible behavior citywide. The initiative positions Cardiff as a leader in smart waste management and sustainability innovation.
