Alternative Cement Manufacturing
Sublime Systems is Leading the Way with Low-Carbon Cement
Georgia Wray Norsten — January 17, 2025Sublime Systems has unveiled a groundbreaking innovation with its fossil-fuel-free cement, marking the first commercial use of this low-carbon material in a Boston building. This cutting-edge technology eliminates the need for carbon-intensive kiln processes, traditionally responsible for 8% of global carbon emissions. Instead, Sublime uses electrochemistry to break down calcium silicate, creating cement that matches traditional standards for strength and durability without the environmental cost.
Co-founded by Leah Ellis and Yet-Ming Chiang, Sublime Systems operates a pilot plant in Somerville, Massachusetts, where it produces batches of cement used in projects like the Boston building's lobby and sidewalk. Supported by an $87 million U.S. Department of Energy grant, the company plans to open a commercial-scale plant in Holyoke by 2026, enabling the production of tens of thousands of tons of carbon-free cement annually.
Sublime’s innovation transforms cement manufacturing and sets a benchmark for sustainability in construction. Sublime Systems is pioneering a cleaner future by eliminating fossil fuel reliance and reducing emissions, making cement a crucial component of global climate solutions.
