Due to the rapidly worsening environmental conditions, caused predominantly by human industrial activity, the richness of ocean life is severely depleting and fish habitats are being destroyed—in this light, coral reef restoration is extremely important.
A company that is striving to bring a solution to the problem is Objects and Ideograms—a design workshop located in the USA. Its newest research product involves "3D-printing with calcium carbonate to create sustainable underwater 'houses' for coral reefs and marine life to grow." Appropriately dubbed 'Coral Carbonate," the units are strategically modelled after natural coral skeletons in order to stimulate the growth of reefs.
This new reef restoration method is developed because other solutions on the market often make use of "unsustainable, manmade materials rather than those native to marine ecosystems."
