Sainsbury's new steak packaging is being rolled out by the UK retailer for its 'by Sainsbury's' range as a way to reduce plastic and also prioritize recyclable alternatives. The meat packaging features a cardboard tray in plastic of plastic or styrofoam alternatives that's covered with a thin piece of plastic, which is reported to result in a 70% reduction in the amount of plastic in each tray. This converts to roughly 249-tonnes of plastic being saved each year from heading to the landfill, while the cardboard tray can be recycled at home by simply washing it before placing it in the recycling bin.

Director of Product and Innovation Claire Hughes commented on the Sainsbury's new steak packaging saying, "As part of our ‘Plan for Better’ commitments, we are trying to reduce plastic packaging across our own brand ranges, as we know that reducing plastic is important to our customers but also on our environmental impact. It’s why we are always looking at ways to innovate our packaging and reduce or replace plastic wherever we can, as quickly as we can.”
