Impulse Turbine Runners
Harbin Electric Unveiled the Largest Impulse Turbine
Debra John — January 3, 2025Harbin Electric has successfully created the world’s largest impulse turbine runner, which is "used in the first 500 MW single-capacity hydroelectric generator at the Zhala Hydropower Station." This marks a key advancement in China’s hydropower technology, particularly for large, high-efficiency systems.
Impulse turbines work by "channeling water through a pressure pipe onto a turbine runner, which converts the energy from the water into power; at the Zhala station, with a design head of 671 meters, the runner plays a crucial role in the system's efficiency." Moreover, given the high pressure it faces, the turbine must be precisely manufactured to handle frequent pressure changes safely.
The environmental benefits of this technology are significant—enhancing hydropower efficiency helps produce more clean, renewable energy. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels and supports efforts to cut carbon emissions, contributing to a more sustainable energy future.
